m-pat 2019 > INTRODUCTION
A 50-day classic accompaniment to decorate autumn nights in Mapo! More than 70 classical concerts, including orchestras, ensembles and operas will be held throughout Mapo-gu for 50 days, and more than 1,000 classical artists will be participating, Beginning Mapo's new elegant cultural tourism trend with global classical music! The festival, which began in 2015 as Mapo Performing Arts & Tourism Festival (M-PAT), became the current classical content festival after the festivals in 2017 and 2018. The classical genre is the world's common culture language - loved throughout history, it has contributed to enriching the existing Mapo-gu festival which consists of conventional music, local culture, interdisciplinary art and broadcast art. In addition, classical is a pure art genre with a favorable reputation, achieved through a new paradigm of classical music festivals held by publicly implementing various 'cultural feasts' through classical music. The fourth M-PAT Classical Music Festival aims to promote the brand of the city of Mapo to foreign tourists visiting Mapo by transforming the live performance halls such as Rolling Hall and Veloso, which are around the Hongdae area, and foreign-only accommodations such as the Han River and Nanu Guest house, into classical concert halls to give tourists more pleasant memories. In addition, we aim to provide a more enjoyable attraction by changing the paradigm of Mapo-gu tourism from shopping and eating-oriented to cultural arts experience-based tourism. The 4th M-PAT Classical Music Festival, in connection with the Mapo Tourist Information Center, also made efforts to actively attract foreign tourists by working with the Korean newspaper in Germany and Asiana Airlines. Moreover, we actively utilized foreign tourist resources such as the Guesthouse Association, the Hotel Representative Committee, Mapo-gu Tourist Information Center, embassies of each country and the Association of Foreigners in Korea to lay the foundation for establishing Mapo-gu as number one in cultural art tourism.
The 4th M-PAT Classical Music Festival 2019 produced "Carmen" in 2017 and "The Love Potion" in 2018, which were the first outdoor operas held by a local government, and received favorable reviews by both critics and audiences. This year, based on the last two years of experience, we will present the opera “The Magic Flute,” one of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's representative operas, at the outdoor Sangam World Cup Park Waterside Special Stage. This year the production of “The Magic Flute” was directed by Lee Hoe Soo, who graduated from the Accademia di bella arti di Roma with the highest score, and the Korean Coop Orchestra will be conducted by Koo MoYeong, a graduate of University of Music and Theatre Leipzig in Germany. Moreover, it features participation of top-class vocalists who are involved in both domestic and international performances, such as tenor Kim Sunghyun, who won first place in the International Singing Competition of Nurnberg (Meistersinger von Nurnberg) in Germany, Soprano Choi Yunjeong, the first Asian to be selected at the Atelier Lyrique de Opera National de Paris, France, and Soprano Lee Yunjeong, the winner of the Greek Maria Callas International Grand Prix Opera Competition. We will welcome the audience at the beautiful Sangam World Cup Park during the autumn nights of 2019 with the opera "The Magic Flute" - full of dynamic adventures of the heroes as they find love, the charming arias from various scenes, and gem-like masterpieces such as the immortal aria sung by The Queen of the Night, "Hell's vengeance boils in my heart" as well as Pamina's “Ah, I feel it, it is vanished”, Tamino's “This image is enchantingly beautiful”, and Papageno's “The birdcatcher am I”.
The 4th M-PAT Classical Music Festival organized a special program to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the release of the Korean song, “Bongseonhwa (Garden Balsam)” this year. It is a relay of 100 representative Korean songs sung by 100 of Korea's representative vocalists. This performance, which celebrates the "100th anniversary of the birth of a Korean song", which began with Hong Nanpa's “Bongseonhwa”, released in 1919, is also a stage for the revival of Korean songs, and so the program is called ‘Korean Song Renaissance’. In this performance, skillful vocalists will gather together to present the beauty of Korean songs, such as veterans including Baritone Park, Soo-Gil, who served as the head of the Korea National Opera, Tenor Ahn Hyung-il and Lim Jeon-Geun and famous vocalists such as Soprano Park Jungwon, Mezzo Soprano Yang Songmi, Tenor Kang Moo-Rim, Baritone Ko Seong-Hyeon and Bass Kim Yo-Han.
The 4th M-PAT Classical Music Festival is a massive urban classical music festival with a total of 70 performances by 32 classical groups and 960 artists, which will provide an enchanting autumn in Mapo with a classic banquet. In addition, the festival is garnering high expectations outside the area because it is hosted through the attraction of external funds to cover all expenses, with a government subsidy and tourism fund. The 4th M-PAT Classical Music Festival 2019 will rediscover various places in Mapo-gu through festivals, transforming the Mapo-gu tourist paradigm from shopping and food into performances and festivals. At the same time, we will continue to improve the brand value of the global art cultural city Mapo through planning a classical program that fosters promising classical musicians. We will provide classical music that any Mapo-gu resident can enjoy, and offer elegant global content to foreign tourists through the sensation of classical music which echoes throughout Mapo-gu.
